Who Is He?
Born in Stockport at the turn of the century, Phil Walter Foden is an English professional footballer vying to break into the Manchester City and English National first team. Born and bred in Manchester, he spent his youth career as part of the Manchester City setup, before finally being included in the first team squad at the beginning of the 2016 season. The fact he is a homegrown talent is something to consider, especially in a Manchester City squad famous for splashing the cash on global superstars.
Foden is a versatile player. He can play on either wing, as well as a wing-back. However, manager Pep Guardiola considers him more of a central midfielder. Though not as tall as former City midfielder Yaya Toure, or as strong as current teammate Fernandinho, Foden excels in other areas, which has fans and pundits alike considering him the natural successor to David Silva, especially due to his dribbling capabilities, passing precision, and inventiveness.
Although Foden does not possess the vast backlog of statistics as teammate Kevin De Bruyne, who we covered last week, there is still something to go off.
The previous season is always the best place to look, especially so early into the season. In Foden’s case, it could also be considered his first full season, as he made 23 appearances in the Premier League and five appearances in the UEFA Champions League, where he also became the youngest English player to score in the competition’s knockout stages.
Through these appearances, he scored seven goals in total, as well as registering four assists. While these stats may not be as impressive compared to more established players, they still demonstrate promising signs, especially if he can get more minutes under his belt in the coming season.
Really, this is merely the tip of the iceberg, and Foden still has plenty of time to fine-tune his game to ensure he can chip in with more goal contributions throughout the season. Considering he is still only 20, it is easy to see why Pep considers him a player that will be important to Manchester City over the next ten years, and perhaps even longer.
Why has his value increased?*
- Lots of hype around his potential
- Recent departure of David Silva will provide an increase in game time
- Recently gained his first England cap (vs. Iceland)
- Increased interest in soccer cards
- Increased interest in collectors looking for promising rookies
Prediction for the future*
Whilst Foden has all you could hope for from a potential goldmine, nothing is ever certain in soccer. He could suffer a severe injury which might disrupt his progress. He could fail to make the CM position his, even following Silva’s departure, especially with the wealth of talent Manchester City have at their disposal. We also know how much Pep loves to tinker with his lineup (much to the disdain of Fantasy Football players), and this will also impact how many minutes he will get, even if we predict he has a strong case to start regularly this season.
If all goes to plan, the price of Foden’s soccer cards will only increase. There are several factors that could influence this, too.
- Consistency: If he gets enough minutes, his abilities will grow much faster
- Form: While not on the level of Kevin De Bruyne (yet), providing goals and assists will increase his reputation, and he has already proven he knows where the goal is.
- Club Form: Manchester City is always a team you will expect to succeed, especially as they will want to regain the Premier League this season and are pushing to win their first Champions League title.
- Honors: Despite already being recognized as winning several team and individual awards, being a more crucial component of this Manchester City team could see his value increase.
- International: Following his debut for England, he will hope to be part of a successful Nations League and Euro 21 campaign, and these competitions have a worldwide appeal.
Considering his age, the jury is still out as to whether Foden will take it to the next level. However, with such hype behind him, there is certainly plenty for you to look out for. Considered by Pep Guardiola as the future of the Manchester City midfield, taking over from the recently departed David Silva, he is sure to get plenty of opportunities this season.
The possibility of more minutes at the top level will allow him to iron out the creases in his game, and if all goes well, it’s not out of the realm of possibility to imagine him becoming a world-class player in the future.
With the support of Guardiola and the chance to play alongside the likes of Kevin De Bruyne, Raheem Sterling, and Sergio Aguero, Foden has all the tools at his disposal to become a top player which will see his card value skyrocket, especially if he makes the Center Midfield position his own this season.
