The goals continue to flow in the Premier League with 36 goals scored across 10 games in Gameweek 3.
Leicester shocked Man City in a seven goal thriller at the Etihad Stadium with veteran striker Jamie Vardy netting a hat-trick. West Brom stunned Chelsea at home and led the Blues 3-0 at half time. But Frank Lampard’s team stormed back to earn a 3-3 draw, the first stalemate of the Premier League season. West Ham put four past Wolves to gain their first three points of the season.
Everton, Liverpool and Aston Villa continued their 100% starts to the season. Everton beat Crystal Palace 2-1 on Saturday, Villa ran out worthy 3-0 winners against struggling Fulham and Liverpool eased past Arsenal with a 3-1 win.
Man United narrowly beat Brighton 3-2 and Tottenham and Newcastle played out a tight 1-1 draw on Sunday with VAR taking centre stage for a dubious handball working in Newcastle’s favour.
Below are the fixtures for Gameweek 4. Plenty of teams will be desperate to pull themselves up the table while others will be fighting to establish their presence at the top of the Premier League.
With another full fixture list this weekend there is plenty at stake before the first international break of the 2020/21 season.
Leeds v Manchester City on Saturday evening will be a blockbuster as both teams favour intense, quick football. Leeds are the second highest scorers in the league with eight goals in three games. Man City will be eager to bounce back from their demolition at the hands of Leicester last weekend.
Although Southampton and West Brom aren’t the biggest teams in the Premier League, this will be an intriguing fixture as both teams have started the season with a stutter. West Brom will be brimming with confidence after racing to a three goal lead against Chelsea last week. Even though they gave up their lead and only registered a draw, they will have plenty of positives taking into this game. Southampton meanwhile won their first game 1-0 against Burnley last week after Danny Ings’ goal proved to be the difference.
Man United are still unconvincing and were fortunate to win against Brighton – a VAR decision led to their winning penalty being awarded after the final whistle. Former United boss Jose Mourinho will be desperate to get one over his former team on Sunday. Mourinho has a knack for picking up results against the best teams and his Spurs side will run Man U right to the wire.
Aston Villa have shocked many with their back to back wins to begin the 2020/21 season. They struggled last season and just avoided relegation but have shaken off their demons from and routed to successive wins in their first two games without conceding a goal. Liverpool will be Villa’s toughest test yet, however. The Reds have won all three of their opening fixtures and have beaten three challenging teams in Leeds, Chelsea and Arsenal. They will be full of confidence but will need to be ruthless against a positive Aston Villa.
Players to Watch
- Mason Mount
After a fairly slow start to the season, Chelsea’s midfield prodigy was the turning point for his team as they came back from 3-0 down to draw 3-3 with West Brom. Mount smashed in Chelsea’s first with a dipping shot from 25-yards to give momentum back to Chelsea. The 21-year-old then drove a low shot across West Brom’s goal in the dying minutes which provided an assist for Tammy Abraham’s late equaliser for Chelsea. It was an all-action performance from Mount and he will now look to gain momentum against Crystal Palace this weekend.
- Jarrod Bowen
Jarrord Bowen provided an element of clinical finishing for West Ham in their 4-0 win over Wolves, something the Hammers have been lacking for some time! Bowen’s first goal came from nothing; he was marked by two Wolves players but managed to work space and curl in an excellent opening goal for West Ham. The midfielder made it 2-0 after half time with an excellent poachers goal, following in a Pablo Fornals shot and tapping in. His contributions for West Ham gave them the drive to go on and win this match 4-0 and Bowen produced a man of the match performance.
- Sadio Mane
Perhaps one of the most consistent strikers in the Premier League, Liverpool’s Sadio Mane has started the 2020/21 in excellent form. The Senegalese forward has already scored three goals in three games for Liverpool and he found the net again in the 3-1 win over Arsenal. Mane earned three points for his team against Chelsea two weeks ago and scored both in the Red’s 2-0 win at Stamford Bridge. The 27-year-old is always a threat so don’t rule him out to score again this weekend against Aston Villa.
