Teams to Follow – Bundesliga

With eight games gone, the Bundesliga table is taking shape, giving you an idea of which teams to follow. All the expected players are there with the likes of Bayern Munich, Borussia Dortmund, and RB Leipzig. There are also a few other teams looking to establish themselves as teams to watch this year, which is why we’ve picked out the six top teams to look at for soccer card value and more.

Bayern Munich

Recent History and Achievements

We all know that Bayern are the most successful team in the Bundesliga, winning the top prize 29 times. They are the reigning champions and also claimed the treble last season, winning the UEFA Champions League and the DFB Pokal.

Why Follow Them?

What can you say about Bayern Munich that hasn’t already been said a hundred times? They are the best team in the league and arguably Europe, and their ranks are packed with quality players such as Robert Lewandowski, Thomas Muller, and Serge Gnabry. Youngsters such as Alphonso Davies are also key to look out for, as will the likes of Kingsley Coman, Leroy Sane, and Benjamin Pavard. They will be keen to repeat last season’s achievements.

Key Players to Look Out For

  • Alphonso Davies
  • Kingsley Coman
  • Benjamin Pavard

Borussia Dortmund

Recent History and Achievements

Dortmund last won the domestic league in 2011/12, although they have come close-ish in recent years. Their last major silverware was the German Cup in 2017, although they claimed the German Supercup in 2019 and finished as runners-up this season.

Why Follow Them?

The formerly favorite club of football hipsters that still holds a place in the hearts of many if you remember that glorious season with the likes of Lewa, Reus, and Gotze. Borussia Dortmund have been in Bayern’s shadow for what feels like forever. This could be the season that this changes, though. Erling Haaland is an exceptional player that continues to defy expectations, while retaining Jadon Sancho should make them a force in the league and in Europe.

Key Players to Look Out For

  • Jadon Sancho
  • Jude Bellingham
  • Erling Haaland

RB Leipzig

Recent History and Achievements

RB Leipzig do not have the history of many other Bundesliga teams and was only founded 11 years ago. Because of this, the recent history and achievements are (almost) non-existent. They finished second in the Bundesliga in 2017, and their only league victory came in the Regionalliga Nordost, which is Germany’s fourth tier.

Why Follow Them?

Julian Nagelsmann has RB Leipzig playing incredible football, and last season’s Champions League semi-final appearance has set the tone. However, they have lost Timo Werner, but Dayot Upamecano has proven to be a rock at the back, and Christopher Nkunku looks decent, chipping in with two assists this season. There is still plenty of time to build on this, though.

Key Players to Look Out For

  • Dayot Upamecano
  • Ibrahima Konaté
  • Christopher Nkunku

Bayer Leverkusen

Recent History and Achievements

Considered the Nearly Men for a long time, Bayer Leverkusen have always almost achieved top honors. They have finished as Bundesliga runner up numerous times, the last being in 2011, and their last piece of silverware came in 1993, winning the DFB Pokal.

Why Follow Them?

Bayer Leverkusen are another team that has suffered from Chelsea’s summer spending spree, losing Kai Havertz. But Florian Wirtz already looks impressive at just 17 years old, providing 4 assists this season. Moussa Diaby is another promising player, although he will need to add more goals to his game and provide support for should-be-in-his-prime striker Lucas Alario.

Key Players to Look Out For

  • Moussa Diaby
  • Florian Wirtz
  • Edmond Tapsoba

Wolfsburg

Recent History and Achievements

Wolfsburg nearly experienced relegation in 2017, only surviving after a relegation play-off at the end of the season with 2. Bundesliga third-place Eintracht Braunschweig. Further disappointment followed the next season, but they managed to remain in the top flight. However, the 2018/19 season saw a change in fortunes, qualifying for the Europa League, and last season they finished seventh. Unlike Bayer Leverkusen, they have tasted Bundesliga glory, finishing as Champions in 2009. They also won the DFB Pokal in 2015.

Why Follow Them?

It’s safe to say that Wolfsburg has not had the happiest last few years. They have flirted with relegation more often than the former champions would have liked. Still, things have started to look up, and they currently sit in sixth place, being one of only two teams still unbeaten (the other being Bayer Leverkusen). Unlike other squads, they don’t have the wealth of young talent, although Josip Brekalo could kick on, while established striker Wout Weghorst will want to continue his fine form from last season and build on his four goals already.

Key Players to Look Out For

  • Josip Brekalo
  • Xaver Schlager
  • Wout Weghorst

Borussia Monchengladbach

Recent History and Achievements

Recent fans may not be as aware, but Borussia Monchengladbach are one of the few successful teams in the Bundesliga, winning the trophy five times during the 70s. However, this was their last experience with top-flight glory. Since the turn of the millennium, their fortunes have been mixed, but they have staked a claim as a top-half team in recent years, and finished a respectable fourth last season, which is nothing to sniff at considering the financial might of Bayern, Dortmund, and RB Leipzig.

Why Follow Them?

If Borussia Monchengladbach can repeat their performances last season, they will be an interesting team to watch, especially when compared to the big boys of the league that are expected to take the top three positions. Marcus Thuram, the son of World Cup winner Lilian, made a name for himself last season with 10 goals and eight assists in the league. But, like Wolfsburg, there is a sore lack of young potential but players like Embolo, 18-year-old Famana Quinzera (who has already been involved in four goals), and new signing Valentino Lazaro could help the push for a second consecutive fourth-place finish, if not higher.

Key Players to Look Out For

  • Marcus Thuram
  • Famana Quizera
  • Breel Embolo

While the table looks as many would have predicted after eight games, there is still plenty of time for things to change. You expect that Bayern, Dortmund, and Leipzig will be up there. But, as always happens with soccer, expect a few surprises along the way, too.
