Premier League action returned last weekend with few surprises, except for Spurs’ convincing 2-0 win over Man City that took them to the top of the table.
Elsewhere, there were routine wins for Man United, Liverpool and Everton while Burnley earned their first win of the season, defeating Crystal Palace 1-0. West Brom and Sheffield United, however, are still winless.
As we gear up for the frantic Christmas and New Year period with games starting to come thick and fast, there will be plenty of Premier League action in the coming weeks, beginning with the game week 10 fixtures below.
Not the most glamorous fixture this weekend, but the level of importance of West Brom and Sheffield United can’t be underestimated. Both winless, both adrift in 20th and 19th place and both suffering. The winner of this match could kick-start their season and leave the other for dead at the foot of the Premier League. Expect an edge, tense game at the Hawthorns this weekend.
Southampton takes on Manchester United at home this weekend. In usual circumstances, United would be clear favourites and their form has improved of late. However, Southampton is unbeaten in seven, have won four of their last six matches and have won three consecutive games at home. The Red Devils themselves have won all three of their away games this season and scored 10 goals on the road.
Chelsea is enjoying an excellent run of form and extended their winning run to six with a Champions League win over Rennes this week. They face a Tottenham side full of confidence following an emphatic 2-0 win over Man City last weekend. Spurs are top of the Premier League table and have won all four of their away matches this season. Jose Mourinho could come back to haunt his former club in game week 10.
Another tie that may not be the most eye-catching this weekend but West Ham and Aston Villa have both surpassed expectations so far this season. The Hammers have only lost one of their last six Premier League matches and won two on the bounce following a 1-0 victory over Sheffield United last weekend. Villa enjoyed a blistering start to the season but tailed off recently, winning just once in their last four – a dominant 3-0 win away at Arsenal.
Players to Watch
- Diogo Jota
Liverpool is without some key players due to injury but Diogo Jota has stepped up in their absence. The Portuguese striker provides a constant threat in the final third. He proved this in the 3-0 win over Leicester last weekend, scoring the Red’s second goal and taking the game away from the Foxes. Jota has scored eight goals in all competitions for Liverpool this season in just 13 appearances.
2. Lucas Digne
Lucas Digne was a key player in Everton’s 3-2 win over Fulham. In the first half, a lot of the play went through Digne on the left side of the pitch. As a result, he provided two assists by crossing from the left, first for Dominic Calvert-Lewin to finish and the second for Abdoulaye Doucouré to header into the net. Everton use this tactic regularly and Digne is one to watch with plenty more assists coming his way this season.
3. Solly March
Solly March is one of Brighton’s key players and he made the difference for his side’s 2-1 win over Aston Villa last weekend. The left midfielder was a regular threat and eventually got on the scoresheet in the second half to win the game for Brighton. It was a man of the match performance worth of winning three points. With just two goals and one assist this season, there may be more to come from the midfielder in the coming weeks.
Don’t Shoot the Messenger
There are several important games this weekend at either end of the table. Things may be tighter in certain encounters, especially for West Brom and Sheffield United, with a potentially season-defining game. But expect normal procedures to resume elsewhere. Big wins for the likes of Man City and Leicester may be on the cards for game week 10.
