Gameweek 33 – English Premier League

Man City took another step closer to the Premier League title in mid-week. The Citizens beat Aston Villa 2-1 to go 11 points clear at the top.

But there is still a lot at stake lower down the league table. The race for the top four is still in full swing as five teams are still vying for their place in the Champions League next season.

This weekend, West Ham host Chelsea in a massive fourth vs fifth clash. Any result here could impact a lot of teams in the top seven positions. Liverpool will also look to keep chase as they play improving Newcastle. Arsenal and Everton have an outside chance of making the Europa League. They face off at the Emirates on Friday.

Arsenal and Everton have had inconsistent seasons. They now sit in ninth and eighth place, with Everton six points off fifth and Arsenal nine points off. However, a win for either side here could give them an edge in the final few games of the season. Arsenal are in better form and are unbeaten in their last four matches. Everton has drawn three consecutive Premier League matches and failed to win in their last five.

Liverpool and Newcastle United are in solid form at opposite ends of the table. Jurgen Klopp’s side has won three of their last four Premier League matches and sit two points off the Champions League places. Newcastle beat West Ham last weekend to record back-to-back wins for the first time since December. Improving form has seen them climb eight points clear of the relegation places. This early Saturday kick-off could be closer than expected.

West Ham v Chelsea: fourth vs fifth, a London derby and a huge match. West Ham has surpassed all expectations this season, largely due to their excellent home form. Only Man City have picked up more home points than the Hammers this season. David Moyes side has also won four of their last four at the London Stadium. Chelsea are in decent form but can’t afford to drop any more points in the Premier League. A 0-0 draw against Brighton and a 5-2 thrashing at home to West Brom has impacted their push for Champions League football next season.

Leeds welcome old rivals Man United to Elland Road on Sunday. These two sides are in excellent form heading into the match. Leeds are unbeaten in five and have taken points off Chelsea, City and Liverpool in recent weeks. United, however, are unbeaten in 12 Premier League matches and haven’t lost away in the league this season. This could be a close one, but an in-form United may just have the edge.

Players to Watch

1. Gylfi Sigurdsson

Following a patchy run of form recently, Everton midfielder Gylfi Sigurdsson put in a man of the match display in his side’s 2-2 draw with Spurs last Friday. The Icelandic playmaker scored twice and took his tally for the season to six goals. Sigurdsson has been in and out of Everton’s starting 11 this season. But he will be hoping his positive performance last week can kick-start a purple patch to end the season.

2. Mason Greenwood

Man United starlet Mason Greenwood is in top form. The striker scored twice in United’s 3-1 win over Burnley last weekend. He now has five goals in his last six matches for the Red Devils. After his super-sub appearance against Spurs two weeks ago, when he provided an assist and a goal in the 3-1 win, Greenwood seems eager to nail down his place in United’s starting 11 to end the 2020/21 campaign.

3. Adama Traore

Adama Traore is a player with so much promise but little end product. The Wolves winger has had a tough season but has been in good form since the international break. Traore scored the winner against Fulham two weeks ago and has provided assists against West Ham and Sheffield United. Three goal contributions in three games is the forwards best run of form so far this season.

Don’t Shoot the Messenger

There could be a few tight results this weekend, particularly in the race for Europe. The teams at the bottom of the table could also struggle in game week 33.
